In a part of the jungle where the trees were tall and the streams clear, Anansi the spider discovered something unusual—a big moss-covered rock with a peculiar power. Every time someone said, “Isn’t this a strange moss-covered rock!” they would fall into a deep sleep for a few hours.

Seeing an opportunity for mischief and personal gain, Anansi decided to exploit the rock’s power. One by one, he invited his friends to come see the “strange moss-covered rock.”

First, he called Lion. As soon as the majestic creature exclaimed, “Isn’t this a strange moss-covered rock!”, he collapsed into slumber. Anansi, seizing the moment, went to Lion’s den and took some of his food.

Then he lured Elephant, and the same thing happened. “Isn’t this a strange moss-covered rock!” Elephant remarked and promptly fell asleep. Anansi raided Elephant’s stash of peanuts.

This trickery continued as Anansi deceived one animal after another, collecting their food and treasures. The jungle began to notice the trend of missing items, but no one could figure out the culprit.

However, Little Bush Deer had observed Anansi’s antics from afar and decided it was time for some payback.

She approached Anansi’s home, pretending not to notice him and said aloud, “Isn’t Anansi’s home a spectacular sight!” Naturally curious and always keen for a compliment, Anansi couldn’t resist asking, “What did you say about my home?”

Little Bush Deer repeated, “Isn’t Anansi’s home a spectacular sight!” But nothing happened. Anansi was puzzled.

She then said, “Come, Anansi, there’s a strange moss-covered rock I want to show you.”

Unable to resist his curiosity, and forgetting his own trick, Anansi followed her. As soon as he laid eyes on the rock, he exclaimed, “Isn’t this a strange moss-covered rock!” and immediately fell into a deep sleep.

While he slept, Little Bush Deer, with the help of the other animals, took back all the stolen goods and returned them to their rightful owners.

When Anansi woke up, he found himself surrounded by all the animals, laughing and pointing at him. Ashamed and embarrassed, he slinked away, vowing to be more careful with his tricks in the future.
